The effects of the DANA not only devastated homes and landscapes, but also left countless animals in vulnerable situations. Overflowing shelters, lost animals and limited resources are just some of the challenges faced by local organizations. Against this backdrop, animal professionals decided to act.
The event brought together veterinarians, nutritionists, educators and natural therapists, all with a common goal: to improve the lives of those most affected. During the weekend, live talks were held on topics such as feeding for animal welfare, stress and emotional management in dogs, first aid for cats and dogs and a wide variety of topics covering the most interesting in animal care. There were more than 150 attendees.
A message of unity and hope
Beyond being an informational event, Animal Hope became a space for connection. Professionals and attendees shared experiences and resources, strengthening a network that will continue to help animals in need beyond the event.
“I’m leaving with a full heart and lots of ideas to help through my small rescue,” said an attendee from Alzira.
Results and Acknowledgments
Thanks to the collaboration and generosity of all those involved, 3,407.52 euros were raised and donated to animal shelters in the most affected areas. This gesture will not only bring tangible help, such as food and medicines, but also hope for those who dedicate their lives to protecting animals.
María, a volunteer from “Refugio de María” in Sueca, shared how they had to evacuate over 30 dogs in the middle of the storm, with water reaching up to their knees. “We didn’t know if we could save them all, but the solidarity was incredible. Neighbors and fellow volunteers showed up with vans, and together, we did it.”
The success of this initiative shows that, when we work together, we can make a difference. The animal community has sent a clear message: we are not alone in this fight, and there will always be those who defend the welfare and dignity of animals, even in the most difficult moments. Let us not forget that they (the rescue dogs) have also helped us in the search and rescue of people, resting little and working with commitment, dedication and effort.
Animal Hope does not end here; it is the beginning of a stream of solidarity that promises to continue to grow.
While the event has ended, the need remains. Shelters still require financial and material support, as well as volunteers. Esperanza Animal has opened an ongoing collaboration channel where anyone can continue contributing. Every little bit counts.
After the Storm: The Current Situation of Animal Shelters
Months after the DANA struck, animal shelters in the affected areas are still dealing with its aftermath. Although the financial aid and increased visibility brought by Esperanza Animal were a major relief during the most critical times, full recovery is still underway.
Several shelters suffered damage to their facilities, forcing them to make urgent repairs or temporarily relocate animals. Some are still struggling to restore proper living conditions and care, with limited resources and high demand. On top of this, many rescued animals are showing signs of stress or fear due to the traumatic experience.
Thanks to the commitment of volunteers, professionals, and donors, many shelters have made progress in rebuilding, but the needs persist: food, medication, supplies, veterinary care, and of course, responsible adoptions.
Solidarity shouldn’t fade when the headlines do. Esperanza Animal has proven that when the community comes together, great things can happen. And now, more than ever, it’s time to keep supporting those who, day after day, are on the front lines caring for the most vulnerable.
